THE PERFECT DAY IN GARNER NC

When you’re ready to spend a day exploring off the beaten track around Raleigh, head East, and get ready to discover a town that’s starting to explode in popularity…enjoy this perfect day in Garner NC!

Garner’s a lovely little suburb of Raleigh that has all the ingredients for a relaxing getaway day—without the long drive. Among its claims to fame: it’s the home of American Idol star Scott McCreery. It has its own great restaurants and fun activities that make it a perfect place to live and work for anyone. As usual in our Perfect Day series, we’ll kick things off with breakfast…

Start with a hearty Garner breakfast

For your most important meal of the day (the one that helps you wake up!), you can’t go wrong with Angie’s, where their tagline is “A taste of friendship.” Angie’s has been serving up good food to Garner for nine years and is packed on the weekend (especially when everyone wants to go out and enjoy the weather). Angie’s is known for its biscuits, and some say that they’re the best in North Carolina.

If you can’t get into Angie’s, try Big Ed’s, which has been around in some form for 63 years and is much loved by locals. They make some red-eye gravy that’ll put some pep in your step and keep you going all day.

  • Big Ed’s Restaurant, 231 Timber Drive

Morning fun

After all those biscuits, you might be ready to work them off with some exercise. White Deer Park has you covered. In addition to dozens of hiking trails, White Deer has tennis courts, a soccer field and playgrounds. Between active fun and people-watching, there’s something for just about everyone.

But what if it rains? Try Rush Hour Karting. Go-Karts are fun for the entire family, and this indoor track has been keeping everyone happy since 2005. Their European style karts can even hit speeds of 40mph!

Get hungry for lunch

With the morning’s activities winding down, you’re probably getting hungry for lunch, and Garner has a number of mouth-watering options. If you’re ready to roll up your sleeves, try City Barbecue. In North Carolina we are, of course, particular about our barbecue, and this spot will keep you happy. They’re known for their brisket sandwich, pulled pork, and mac ‘n cheese—so you certainly won’t leave hungry.

Or, if you’re in the mood for somewhere a little fancier, try Alexander’s Mediterranean Cuisine. A fixture in the Garner food scene, Alexander’s has been serving Mediterranean specialties here for nearly a decade. Particular favorites are their salads, as well as their spanakopita.

Afternoon shopping

Now that you’ve eaten your fill, and you want to walk off some of those calories, how about some shopping? Several larger shopping malls have you covered: Garner Town Square, with 30+ stores to choose from, or White Oak Crossing. Or, for a more friendly, local touch pay a visit to Little Details Boutique, for clothing and accessories. And if western wear is your style, The Country Connection is a must-visit.

  • White Oak Crossing, 120 Shenstone Blvd

  • The Country Connection, 1975 Hwy 70 E

Dinner and drinks

Check the schedule at The Garner Performing Arts Center to see if you can catch one of their evening entertainments. And be sure to schedule time for dinner. Maybe at the popular Uzbek restaurant Karavan By 3 Olives. Not familiar with Uzbek cuisine? Just browse their gallery of tasty ethnic delights from lamb chops to dumplings to kabobs, and you’ll want to give it a try.

Or, enjoy a hearty American menu while whetting your palate with some moonshine—in fact, probably more variations of moonshine than you’ve ever seen before, at MoonRunner’s Saloon. They regularly have guest chefs and guest bartenders bringing you some great food and fantastic cocktails. Sop the drinks up with their delicious cuts of meat, sandwiches and more.
